The siblings also pledge to protect each other in times of need. On Raksha Bandhan sisters perform ‘puja’ (worship) for their brothers who reciprocate by showering gifts on them like new clothes, gold jewellery etc.
The festival is observed on the Shravan Purnima day, which falls in the Hindu calendar month of Shraavana . This usually falls in the month of August. The sisters make intricate ‘rakhi’ by decorating threads with beads and colourful designs to tie it around their brothers wrist. Raksha Bandhan means “the bond of protection” or “bond of love”.
